Mistakes That Can Cost You an International Internship

Resume is too generic

An internship isn't looking for someone with years of experience, but rather for a clear professional profile. A resume that's too vague hides your potential.

Reason unrelated to the mission

A common mistake is to talk about yourself without explaining why the internship is a natural opportunity for growth.

Do not confuse motivation with suitability

Simply saying that you’re motivated isn’t enough. An internship application must demonstrate that the internship’s objectives, the organization, and what you hope to learn from it are all aligned. The recruiter needs to understand why this specific internship is a logical next step : not just an attractive opportunity.

Reread the job posting as a list of problems to solve. If the job description mentions research, coordination, data analysis, or communication, your resume and cover letter should include at least one credible example of that skill.

Make Your Resume Easy to Read in Thirty Seconds

An international internship resume is often rejected because it takes too much effort to read. Work experiences should be prioritized, dated, linked to results, and presented using concise action verbs.

The best approach is to tailor the top section of your resume to the job opening: field, languages, tools, availability, and the most relevant achievements. Less relevant experiences can be included, but they shouldn’t overshadow the essentials.

  • A clear title that aligns with the intended internship.
  • Languages and availability are displayed.
  • Tangible results rather than to-do lists.

Secure Shipping and Tracking

A common mistake is to submit an incomplete or incorrectly named application. Use well-organized files, a clear email subject line, and a professional signature. If the job posting requires a specific form, avoid submitting applications through other channels unless officially instructed to do so.

After sending it, make a note of the date, the version of the application, and the channel used. This practice helps you follow up effectively and understand what works from one application to the next.
